Acne Scarring

Different people have different attitudes toward acne scarring. Some people may not be bothered with acne scarring at all while others may feel effects ranging from shyness to psychological distress or even varying degrees of depression. If you have acne scarring that you wish to improve, Fraxel laser is the latest and most effective method of improving the appearance of acne scar damaged skin.

Causes of Acne Scarring

Acne scarring is the result of the body's natural reaction to injury. Acne is caused when sebum and bacteria collect in pores as a result of overactive sebaceous glands. Sometimes these get infected. The body will naturally try and fight off the infection and scars may be formed as with any injury as a result of healing. Some people are more prone to acne scarring than others and severity of acne scarring may thus vary from person to person. The factors that make a person susceptible to acne scarring are not well known.

Types of Acne Scarring

Acne scarring is classified into two general types: depressed scars, and raised scars. The severity of tissue inflammation may cause a growth in tissue formation resulting in raised acne scarring. The scars created in this manner are known as keloids. This type of acne scarring is associated with an overgrowth of collagen. The overproduction of collagen is the culprit in causing raised acne scarring. In certain cases keloid acne scarring may diminish with time, though this will usually take years and the appearance of the skin will never be perfectly restored.

The other type of acne scarring is generated by a destruction of tissue resulting in depressed acne scarring. More common than keloid acne scarring, this type of acne scarring can vary slightly in appearance. There are several specific variations of this kind of acne scarring depending partly on where scarring occurs on the body. These include ice-pick scars usually occurring on the cheeks and resembling tiny wounds from an ice pick. A similar but larger variety of acne scarring is known as depressed fibrotic scars. Follicular macular atrophy is a type of depressed acne scar that is more likely to occur on the chest or back.

Prevention of Acne Scarring

Because acne scarring may occur for different reasons for different people and the severity of scarring may vary from person to person, it can be difficult to predict. Once scarring has occurred it will be more difficult to treat. Treating active acne is thus a good way to prevent and minimize acne scarring.
